Know Your True Style

"Don't be into trends. Don't make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way you live." ~ Gianni Versace

This wouldn't be a French-inspired blog without having a style component. And yes, I do believe that style connects with one's health. Knowingly or not, we communicate with others by the way we dress and the way we live, and our choices affect our subconscious as well. While style weaves through all aspects of living, today I am focusing on how we dress ourselves.

We've all experienced buyer's remorse. Maybe you were out shopping, and for some reason--a sale, the store ambience, a bad day, etc.--you bought something on a whim that you truly didn't need or want. Or perhaps you did genuinely like what you bought, but in reality you never wear it, or when you get home you realize that it doesn't quite go with anything else in your closet. We've all been there! This can be alleviated by knowing your true style.

1. The first part of knowing your true style is learning what silhouettes and colors suit you.

You do not need a certain body type in order to look good in your clothes. It's about knowing the silhouettes, fabrics, proportions, and colors that highlight your best physical features and complexion. Once you know what to look for, shopping becomes easy. For example, I know that as much as I love the look of skinny jeans, white pants, shift dresses, and many pastel shades, they are not my friends. They are not as becoming on me as jeans with curves, dark pants, wrap dresses, and jewel tones. Check out The Pocket Stylist by Kendall Farr to help you learn what colors and silhouettes will make you look your best. One easy tip for knowing if a color works is by bringing the fabric up to your face in a mirror with good lighting. If it makes you look sallow, ditch it, it it brightens your eyes and complements your complexion, go for it. Once you know what to look for and what bypass at the store, shopping will get a lot easier.

2. The second step of knowing your true style is putting into words what your unique style is.

Think about your favorite designers and whose styles you admire. What are your daily activities, what is the climate where you live, and what feels comfortable for you?  In Lessons from Madame Chic: 20 Stylish Secrets I Learned while Living in Paris, Jennifer L. Scott suggests that you create a label for your style in a couple of words. My label is casual elegance, and my wardrobe mostly consists of casual pieces in feminine silhouettes made out of soft fabrics. (Lessons from Madam Chic is a game-changing book in many ways, and I highly recommend it as a guide for discovering your signature look, among other things.) Having a label for your style will help you put together a wardrobe that truly works for you. You won't have a schizophrenic collection of clothing that stresses you out just to look at.

When you know the colors and silhouettes that work for you and have a label for your personal look, your true style is revealed, and you know exactly what to look for next time you buy clothes. You will feel beautiful, and I believe that every woman should think she's beautiful. Shop your own style; no more buyer's remorse!

How does style connect to wellness?

1. Your style is a component of the unique person you are. Embrace it!

2.When you are wearing clothes that look great on you and that you love, you will live more genuinely, and gain confidence.

3. When you feel confident, you move differently. Confidence causes you to become more outgoing and ready to take on the world.

4. When you're wearing clothes you love, you'll move more and with better posture. I know that when I get new fitness apparel, I'm more motivated to exercise. Clothing impacts our motivation.

4. Dressing authentically helps you to be comfortable in your own skin and demonstrates respect for others and for yourself. You are showing the world who you are.

5. Having a wardrobe full of items that work well together and knowing what to look for when shopping decreases stress and helps you become effortlessly chic.

Don't dress like anyone else but yourself! You are unique, and that's a beautiful thing!
